The series was a spiritual successor to Ghosh’s 2003 National Award-winning film Shubho Mahurat , where Ranga Pishima was famously portrayed by Rakhee Gulzar. In this 2013 adaptation, Ghosh chose veteran actress Alokananda Roy to step into the role of the observant, non-judgmental sleuth.

Rumors circulated that Ghosh wanted to cast Rituparna Sengupta (his long-time muse) in the lead as Ranjana, but with a twist: she would be aged 20 years, with grey hair and varicose veins. For a rare male lead, he was rumored to be approaching Prosenjit Chatterjee to play a retired jatra (folk theater) actor.
