L'idea del film nasce da un'esigenza profonda di Benigni: raccontare l'orrore dell'Olocausto attraverso una lente diversa, quella della favola. Ispirandosi in parte alle vicende del padre Luigi Benigni, che fu internato per due anni in un campo di lavoro tedesco, e al libro di Rubino Romeo Salmonì, Un capitolo della mia vita, il regista toscano ha costruito una narrazione divisa in due atti ben distinti.
