(Korean title: 아랑 사또전, Arang Sattajeon ) aired on MBC from August 15 to October 18, 2012. It runs for 20 episodes and stars Lee Joon-gi (now Lee Joon-gi) as Eun-oh, the magistrate, and Shin Min-a as Arang, a amnesiac ghost. The series is loosely based on the classic Korean folktale "The Legend of Arang," which originates from the Miryang area. In the original folklore, Arang was a virgin magistrate’s daughter who was murdered by a servant; her ghost appears to subsequent magistrates to demand justice.
K-dramas often try to blend genres, but few swing this wildly. One scene has Arang comically trying to eat human food (which passes through her possessed body) and the next has Eun-oh weeping over his mother’s skeleton. No retrospective is complete without critique. The middle episodes (roughly 9–14) suffer from : Arang runs off alone, gets captured, Eun-oh rescues her, repeat.
