The two tomes of I--- Mazanza (published anonymously in 1978 and 1985 respectively) have received scant critical attention, often dismissed as uneven or hermetic. Yet their very disjunction offers rich terrain for analyzing the crisis of selfhood in post-Mobutu Congo. The ellipsis in the title—three dashes after the “I”—is not a typo but a structural device. I--- Mazanza Tomes 1 and 2 constitute a deliberate anti-bildungsroman. The protagonist does not grow whole; instead, the narrative form cracks under the weight of historical violence. Reading the two volumes together reveals that the missing initial is not a lack but a space—a space where the reader must stand, completing the “I” through their own act of interpretation.
