The film’s title suggests a specific time: 1975 to 1990. But abuse survivors live in an eternal “15 years later.” For every Kevin Reevey, the gap between victimization and speaking out is shrinking. Thanks to The Boys of St. Vincent , mandatory reporting laws in Canada were strengthened. The film’s raw depiction of a priest manipulating a boy in a rectory became a training tool for social workers.
The story skips forward a decade and a half, finding the central antagonist, (played by Henry Czerny), living a quiet, secular life in Montreal with a wife and two young sons. The peaceful facade is shattered when Canadian police arrive at his door with an arrest warrant for charges of rape and gross indecency stemming from his time at St. Vincent’s.
