“Adultery.” Within the fiction, the characters are not technically adulterous, as they are married to each other. Yet, the feeling of transgression is real. They have created a fantasy of infidelity. The film cleverly asks: Is the sin in the act or in the label? By calling their encounter something else—a “game,” an “experiment”—they give themselves permission to want what they already possess.
