She stayed because the moth was not a librarian, and the island of time was not real, and the old country had never existed except in the stories she told to keep the silence from eating him alive. She stayed because there was no other place in the world where her particular brand of darkness made sense to anyone.

Perhaps that is the point. The story is not about the outcome. It is about the pause, the candlelight, the cool cloth on a burning forehead. The keyword survives because it is incomplete. We are all invited to finish it with our own acts of compassion.

“A death’s-head hawkmoth,” she said. “Found it on my windowsill this morning. Already dead. I thought you’d appreciate the irony.”

In 2019, an indie game developer released a 10-minute interactive vignette titled Lady K and the Sick Man on Itch.io. In it, you play as Lady K, with only three actions: bring water, change bandages, or read aloud. You cannot cure him. The game ends when he either dies or recovers—seemingly at random. Players reported crying, not from sadness, but from the weight of helpless care. The game’s tagline: "You cannot save everyone. But you can sit with them."
