Unlike previous entries where Adol is often the sole protagonist surrounded by a rotating cast, Ys X introduces a true dual-protagonist system. Adol is joined by Karja Balta, a Norman princess and pirate. The narrative thrust of the game revolves around their reluctant partnership. They are bound by a mysterious spiritual chain, forcing them to work together to overcome the "Griegr"—undead monsters that threaten the islands of the gulf.
