T2 Trainspotting Jun 2026

Adapting Irvine Welsh’s sequel novel, Porno , was a daunting task. For years, rumors circulated about a follow-up, but scheduling conflicts and script delays kept the project in development hell. When it finally materialized, it did so with a script by John Hodge that wisely trimmed the more outlandish elements of the book (which focused heavily on the porn industry) to focus on the fractured relationships of the four central men.

Danny Boyle has always been a maximalist, and T2 Trainspotting is a visual feast. Do not expect a gritty, washed-out sequel. Boyle uses the full toolkit of digital cinema: split-screens, speed-ramping, freeze-frames, and surrealist fantasy sequences. T2 Trainspotting

The story follows Renton (Ewan McGregor) as he returns to Edinburgh to make amends with the friends he betrayed. Characters

It avoids the trap of fan service. There is no "reunion" scene where they all laugh about the toilet or the dead baby. When the four men finally stand in a room together, the tension is palpable and violent, not nostalgic.

The film is dripping with meta-commentary. Renton and Sick Boy sit in the same dilapided pub from the first film, referencing the past but unable to recapture the magic. When they speak of "the old days," it’s with a bitter sting. Hodge’s script is clever enough to know that the audience wants a hit of the original’s energy, but it refuses to dose us cheaply.
