In the late 19th century, a Harvard physicist named Wallace Clementine Sabine became the father of architectural acoustics. Tasked with fixing the terrible echo in a lecture hall, he discovered the mathematical relationship between a room's volume, its surface materials, and the time it takes for sound to decay (reverberation time).
