Monica is introduced as the "den mother" of the group. Her obsessive cleaning is present, but not dominant. In Season 1, she is struggling in her career (working as a waitress despite being a chef) and navigating a secret relationship with "Fun Bobby." She is the anchor, but she is also jealous and insecure—especially of Ross’s education.

Unlike later seasons, Season 1 uses very little non-diegetic music (music not coming from a source in the scene). The theme song—"I'll Be There for You" by The Rembrandts—only plays over the credits. The soundscape is dominated by the live studio audience laugh track. However, careful listeners will notice that the laughs in Season 1 are more subdued and genuine. By Season 3, the laughs become thunderous after every line. The Season 1 laughter feels like you’re actually in the audience at NBC Studio 24.
