The sequel does not resurrect Maximus. Instead, it shifts focus to the only surviving bloodline from the first film. The protagonist is —the young son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and the nephew of the deranged Emperor Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix).
No film carries more baggage than Gladiator 2 . Cult classics, Best Picture winners, and beloved heroes rarely survive the sequel machine. But Ridley Scott, at 86 years old, is not interested in a safe cash-grab. He has spent four years perfecting this vision, and Paul Mescal brings a fresh vulnerability to the sandals.
Gladiator 2 may not echo Maximus’s specific pain, but it promises to echo his spirit. And in the Colosseum of cinema, that might be enough to earn a thumbs-up.
