The movie begins with Dr. Laura Shepherd, a linguist who is recruited by the government to communicate with aliens who have landed on Earth. The aliens, who are referred to as "the twelve," have come to Earth in search of a new home. Laura, along with a physicist, Ian Donell (played by Bill Pullman), and a journalist, Jim Harris (played by Greg Kinnear), work together to communicate with the aliens.
