One of the most distinct features of Closer is how it handles time. The film spans several years, yet Nichols refuses to show us the "middle" of the relationships. We see the meetings, the breakups, and the affairs, but we never see the mundane daily life of the couples. We never see a dinner date where they laugh, or a holiday where they relax.

The film closes where it began: on a London street. Alice, having finally escaped Dan, walks away. She looks at a CCTV camera. She smiles—not warmly, but defiantly. She disappears into the crowd of strangers. Dan stands alone, searching for her, realizing he never knew her at all. Closer -2004-
