Nerima Kingdom [work] -

Final Score: A stubborn, glorious 7/10. I think. I’m not sure anymore. Is that a cat under the vending machine?

But it is also unforgettable. Twenty years from now, you will not remember the perfect frame rate of Virtua Fighter 2 or the crisp controls of Nights into Dreams . You will remember standing in a virtual convenience store at 2 AM, watching a pixelated old man buy a carton of milk for the 47th time, as a haunting piano melody plays, and feeling a profound sense of melancholy that no other game has ever replicated. Nerima Kingdom

Nerima Kingdom is a terrible game by conventional standards. It is obtuse, glitchy, slow, and often boring. It will make you scream at your television. You will consult guides. You will cheat. Final Score: A stubborn, glorious 7/10

The digitized video sequences are where the game’s madness truly shines. Real actors, filmed against green screens, are composited into these 3D environments. The acting is deliberately stilted, the dialogue delivered in a flat, affectless tone that borders on the hypnotic. One moment, you’ll be talking to a gentle old woman who runs a tofu shop; the next, she will turn to the camera and deliver a five-minute monologue about the migratory patterns of crows, her face completely static. It’s unintentionally hilarious and deeply unnerving at the same time. Is that a cat under the vending machine

In the 2020s, as streaming giants like Netflix and Disney+ pour billions into Japanese animation, the physical origin points of the industry face a crisis. Real estate prices in Nerima are rising. Old studio buildings are being demolished for luxury apartments. The original Mushi Production building is gone. The "Kingdom" is under siege by gentrification.
