A famous Hadith narrated by Mu’adh ibn Jabal illustrates this perfectly. When the Prophet (PBUH) sent Mu’adh to Yemen, he asked him: "How will you judge if a case is brought to you?" Mu’adh replied: "I will judge by the Book of Allah." The Prophet asked: "If you do not find it there?" Mu’adh said: "Then by the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah." The Prophet asked: "If you do not find it there?" Mu’adh said: "Then I will exert my own reasoning (Ijtihad)." The Prophet (PBUH) was pleased with this answer.
Modern Islamic education faces a crisis: a glut of memorizers but a shortage of thinkers.
