When Black Ops III was released in late 2015, the Call of Duty franchise was in a state of flux. The series had fully committed to the "jetpack" era of movement mechanics, a departure from the boots-on-the-ground realism that defined the early 2010s. While Sledgehammer Games had pioneered this advanced movement in Advanced Warfare , Treyarch took the concept and refined it into a fluid, almost parkour-like system.
