Interestingly, the book is vastly different from the film. In Duncan’s original story, the protagonists are high school students who accidentally hit a young boy with their car and flee the scene. The movie changed the victim to an adult man and introduced the iconic fisherman villain. Unlike the film’s supernatural slasher elements, Duncan’s novel focused more on psychological suspense—a fact that made the author publicly dislike the movie adaptation. Nevertheless, it was the film that cemented the phrase into pop culture lexicon.
