Historically, beginning around the 11th century, Ismaili missionaries arrived in India faced with a deeply entrenched Vedic and Vedantic tradition. Rather than imposing an alien theological language, they adopted a strategy of taqiyya (precautionary dissimulation) and cultural synthesis.
