
If the upstream boundary fluctuates (e.g., due to wave action), Flow-3D Hydro models the resulting pressure surges inside the crack. Resonant frequencies can be identified; if the crack's natural frequency matches the surge frequency, catastrophic propagation occurs.
Flow Science (the developer of Flow-3D) has recently introduced improved DEM coupling, making this multi-stage failure simulation a reality. Engineers will soon be able to simulate the entire lifetime of a concrete dam's crack from first water penetration to final breach.
