The name "Litany of the Sea" is not metaphorical. Imam al-Shadhili is reported to have recited it aboard a ship during a violent storm. When the sea calmed instantly, the Prophet told him that whoever recites this litany with sincere faith will be protected from the perils of water, fire, disease, and the treachery of enemies.
