The movie picks up where The Two Towers left off, with Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) and his loyal friend Samwise Gamgee (Sean Astin) continuing their perilous journey to destroy the One Ring. The fate of Middle-earth hangs in the balance as they draw closer to Mount Doom, the only place where the Ring can be destroyed. Meanwhile, Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), and Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) form an alliance with the armies of Rohan and Gondor to distract Sauron's forces and give Frodo and Sam a chance to complete their mission.
