It was notably the first film released under the Walt Disney Pictures banner to receive a rating from the MPAA due to "action/adventure violence". Box Office & Reception Commercial Success:

It holds a 79% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.1/10 on IMDb . Plot Highlights

Johnny Depp (Jack Sparrow), Geoffrey Rush (Barbossa), Orlando Bloom (Will Turner), and Keira Knightley (Elizabeth Swann).

✅ Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow? Iconic from the first “savvy?” ✅ Orlando Bloom & Keira Knightley? Peak early 2000s chemistry. ✅ That twist with the cursed Aztec gold? Still gives chills.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) - IMDb

However, the subsequent sequels ( Dead Man’s Chest , At World’s End ) became bloated with mythology, time travel, and cosmic entities. They lost the simplicity of Part 1 . In the original, the curse was a simple tragedy: eat the fruit, return the gold, die. In the sequels, we got sea goddesses, Davy Jones’ locker, and a crab-walking Jack Sparrow. While fun, none recaptured the lightning-in-a-bottle magic of the first film.

At 143 minutes, the film is long, but it never drags. There is a set piece every fifteen minutes: the escape from Port Royal, the night raid on the Interceptor , the chase to Isla de Muerta, the final skeleton battle. It is a masterclass in blockbuster rhythm.

They don’t make blockbusters like this anymore. Savvy? 🍻
