The 1969 Stonewall Riots , often cited as the catalyst for the modern movement, were spearheaded by trans women of color like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera . Despite this, it wasn't until the late 1990s that the "T" was consistently added to the "LGB" acronym to formally include gender identity alongside sexual orientation.
