Knowing that Rem loves Misa, Light engineers a situation where L is on the verge of exposing Misa as the Second Kira. He forces Rem into a corner: if she does nothing, Misa will be executed. To save Misa, Rem must kill L and Watari.
Prior to this episode, the arc involving the Yotsuba Group and the third Kira, Higuchi, had reached its climax. Light had successfully reclaimed his memories after relinquishing the Death Note, outsmarting everyone in a complex gambit involving Rem and Misa Amane.
