is not a good movie. But it is a great artifact. It is loud, dumb, politically confused (anti-government yet pro-military), and impossibly earnest. In an age of sanitized, franchise-managed blockbusters, there is something refreshing about a film willing to put a Chevy Impala on a subway track and shoot Willem Dafoe with a magnetic cannon.
Letβs address the elephant in the room immediately. The original xXx starred Vin Diesel as Xander Cage, aζιsports junkie turned spy. For the sequel, Diesel walked away (choosing to make The Pacifier instead, a decision that remains baffling to this day). In his place, the studio cast as Darius Stone, a former National Security Agency operative who lands in military prison for insubordination. xXx- State of the Union
However, when it came time for the sequel, Vin Diesel famously stepped away. The reasons were a mix of scheduling conflicts with The Chronicles of Riddick and a reluctance to sign a multi-picture deal. This left the producers with a dilemma: how do you continue a franchise built entirely around a specific characterβs charisma when that character is gone? is not a good movie
