The film takes place in the 15th century, during the Ming dynasty. Matt Damon plays William, a rugged mercenary who teams up with a Chinese warrior, Jing Tian, to protect the Great Wall from invading monsters known as the "TaoTe". These creatures are an ancient evil that threatens to destroy China and its people. As William and Jing's characters navigate the treacherous landscape, they join forces with a group of skilled warriors, including a grizzled captain, played by Pedro Pascal.

The Tao Tei are savage, alien-like creatures that emerge every 60 years to feed on humanity. As waves of these beasts besiege the wall, William must decide between his original mission of greed or joining forces with (Jing Tian) to fight for the survival of mankind.
