This “upward comparison” steals joy. A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that silver medalists (analogous to Rank 02) appear objectively less happy during medal ceremonies than bronze medalists (Rank 03). Why? Bronze medalists compare themselves to those who didn’t podium at all (“At least I got a medal”). Silver medalists compare themselves to those who beat them (“I almost had it”).
