Relative Race has had modest contestants before. However, the show is a timed competition. If one team refuses to complete a challenge, they cannot advance to the next clue. This effectively stops the race for everyone else. From a logistical standpoint, a team refusing to complete a mandatory task is considered a voluntary withdrawal (a "quit"). Sources close to the production (who spoke anonymously to reality TV recappers) suggested that Josh and Tiffany were not removed for their beliefs, but for stalling the race schedule. The crew had permits, hotel bookings, and camera crews on the clock. One team’s delay costs tens of thousands of dollars. They were given an ultimatum: do the challenge in the uniform provided, or turn in your bib.
