The final 20-minute “out of this world” musical sequence inside the Crystal Tower theater is a formal triumph. Using layered lighting, shifting aspect ratios, and 3D parallax (even in 2D home releases), the animation mimics a live Broadway theatrical experience. However, the film critiques its own beauty: the show almost kills the performers. That the hologram moon crashes and the live animals must improvise suggests that Sing 2 distrusts perfect CGI polish – a rare self-aware moment for Illumination.
