This is a philosophical-essay by the Chilean aesthetician and musicologist Gastón Soublette. The book explores the symbolic and spiritual dimensions of the male face in art, particularly focusing on Christ’s face in religious painting, as well as archetypes of masculinity found in Western and Eastern iconography. Soublette analyzes how facial expressions—serenity, suffering, transcendence—reflect inner human states and cultural ideals. Key chapters examine the Veronica’s veil , El Greco’s portraits, and the contrast between Greek and Christian representations of the human face. The work is often used in university courses on aesthetics, anthropology of the image, and religious art.
