An (or .iso) is a digital clone of an optical disc. Unlike a simple folder of MP3s or documents, an ISO preserves the exact file system, boot sector, and security sectors of the original game disc. For the original Xbox, this is particularly tricky because Microsoft used a proprietary file system called Xbox File System (XFS) , which standard Windows or Mac computers cannot read without special tools.
