Lucas was deeply influenced by Akira Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress (from which he borrowed the "two bickering peasants" dynamic for C-3PO and R2-D2), Joseph Campbell’s monomyth theory, and the pulpy war films of his youth. But the revolutionary concept Lucas brought to the table was the "used future." Until Star Wars , sci-fi sets looked like clean, white showrooms. Lucas demanded dirt. He wanted the Millennium Falcon to look like a "flying garbage truck." He wanted stormtroopers to have chipped armor. This aesthetic grounded the fantasy in a tactile reality that audiences intuitively grasped.
It is important to note that the subtitle Episode IV - A New Hope was not part of the original 1977 release. Lucas added the subtitle in the 1981 re-release to retroactively fit the film into his planned nine-episode saga (which eventually gave us the prequels and the sequels). Furthermore, Lucas made a pivotal decision during the editing process. His wife, Marcia Lucas, was a crucial editor on the film. It was her suggestion to destroy the Death Star at the end of the film (in early drafts, the Rebels simply fled), giving the movie a triumphant, explosive climax. She also helped refine the editing of the trench run, intercutting the action with reaction shots to heighten the tension—a technique that won the film an Academy Award for Best Editing.
