The film is based on the true story of Dashrath Manjhi (1934–2007), a resident of Gehlaur village in Bihar. In 1959, his wife, (played by Radhika Apte in the film), died after falling from a treacherous mountain pass while bringing him food. Because the mountain blocked direct access to medical care, the nearest hospital was over 55 kilometers (34 miles) away.
