Wonka then breaks down, revealing his childhood trauma: his dentist father, Dr. Wilbur Wonka (Christopher Lee), forbade candy and removed his braces painfully, causing Wonka to run away. Charlie helps Wonka reconcile with his estranged father. Principal photography took place from June to December 2004 at Pinewood Studios in the UK and in the Bavarian Alps, Germany (for the exterior of the Bucket house). The chocolate river and many factory interiors were practical sets built to massive scale, while Oompa Loompas were played by actor Deep Roy using digital duplication.
