The final minutes of Chapter 1 are iconic. After controlling Kris all game, control is relinquished. Kris stands still, then rips out their own soul (the red heart), throws it into a birdcage, and pulls out a shining silver knife, grinning menacingly at the screen. It confirmed that Kris is not a silent avatar, but a prisoner in their own body.

In a scene that has sparked thousands of fan theories, the player (the soul) is ripped from Kris’s body and trapped in a cage. Kris, seemingly possessed by an outside force or perhaps revealing their true nature, brandishes a knife and tears open a new Dark Fountain. The screen cuts to black.
