The plot of The Circle of Fire is deceptively simple. Hercules arrives in a small, drought-stricken village called Cyrna. The villagers are terrified not by a hydra or a cyclops, but by something far more relatable: a tyrannical blacksmith named Belus (played with snarling glee by Patrick Kake). Belus has discovered a vein of enchanted fire-stones—meteoric gems that burn eternally without being consumed. Using these stones, he has forged an invincible sword and a set of armor that deflects all mortal weapons. Kevin Sorbo’s Hercules wasn’t invincible
Unlike modern superhero stories where power levels rise to meet every threat, this episode champions ingenuity. Hercules doesn’t win by getting angrier or discovering a new power. He wins by using his brain. He studies Belus’s arrogance, learns the source of his power, and devises an environmental solution. The climax—Hercules luring Belus into the sea-cave just as Nautica releases the vapor—is a satisfying example of brains triumphing over brawn. still early in his tenure
Kevin Sorbo, still early in his tenure, delivers a performance that balances gravity with a twinkle. One memorable scene shows Hercules sitting by a campfire, despondent after his defeat. Nautica asks if he’s afraid. He replies, “Every day. But courage isn’t not being afraid. It’s being afraid and doing the right thing anyway.” That line became a mantra for the show’s writers for the next five seasons.
