The Eminence in Shadow is a Japanese light novel series written by Daisuke Aizawa and illustrated by Tōzai. It has spawned a popular manga adaptation and an anime (seasons 1 & 2, with a film announced) produced by Nexus. The story follows Minoru Kagenou, a boy obsessed with becoming a "mastermind operating from the shadows"—someone who isn't the main hero or villain, but the hidden force manipulating everything. After dying in a training accident, he reincarnates into a fantasy world as Cid Kagenou, where he proceeds to live out his delusion by creating a fake secret organization, Shadow Garden, and making up a fictional enemy, the Cult of Diablos.
