Interestingly, Water for Elephants was published just as the public tide began turning against animal acts. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus used the novel’s popularity as a backdrop, but ironically, they shut down their elephant acts in 2016—partly due to pressure from activists who used scenes from this novel as evidence of inherent cruelty.
