In late 2021, after nearly 300 films, Azumi Harusaki went on an indefinite hiatus. No official retirement statement was ever released, but her social media (now deleted) last posted a photo of a hiking trail in Nagano with the caption: “Finally, silence I chose.”
Her films are slowly being restored. The National Film Archive of Japan released a 4K restoration of Nagareru in 2023. Criterion has hinted at an "Ozu’s Women" box set, which would include three of her best performances.
