His wish comes true. As Dorian embarks on a life of selfishness and moral decay under Lord Henry’s influence, every sin, cruelty, and vice leaves its mark not on Dorian’s face, but on the hidden portrait. The image grows old, wrinkled, and grotesque, reflecting his true corrupted soul, while Dorian himself remains pristine and youthful. Eventually, unable to bear the evidence of his crimes—including the suicide of a jilted lover, Sybil Vane, and a murder—Dorian destroys the painting, only to suffer an ironic and horrific fate.
