The movie takes off with Martin Lawrence playing Detective Alex "Blue" Williams, a tough, street-smart, and hot-headed LAPD officer who dreams of going undercover. After a chance encounter with a jewel thief (played by Robert De Niro's cousin, Jonathan De Niro, and a few other thugs), Blue gets himself and his new partner, Detective Jack Trager (William Shatner), assigned to a high-profile jewelry heist case.

Two years later, Miles is released from prison and returns to find the building is now a fully operational police station. To retrieve his loot, he poses as a newly transferred detective. The comedy escalates as his fake crime-solving skills accidentally make him the station's top cop, all while he tries to outrun his old criminal partner (Dave Chappelle) and stay ahead of a suspicious detective (Luke Wilson).
