While the anime was aimed at children (despite its violence), Go Nagai’s original Mazinger Z manga is a brutal, surrealist masterpiece. Most of these manga chapters have never been officially translated into English.
In the 1980s, a company called Select-A-Train re-cut Mazinger Z into a show called Tranzor Z for American TV. They changed character names (Koji Kabuto became "Tommy Davis") and spliced episodes together. Many of these specific broadcast masters were thought lost. Thanks to the archive, you can find VHS-rips of Tranzor Z that include the original 1985 commercial breaks for Garbage Pail Kids and Transformers toys.
